Define hypothesis. Discuss the characteristics and functions of hypothesis.

Answer – A hypothesis is a testable description of the relationship between the variables, it is a temporary proposal based on observations, or it can be considered how ideas move together. For example, a coach might have hypothesized how changes in examinations of students in teaching techniques will change. Thus, the instructor may have formed this hypothesis_by looking at the students; Research in academic psychology also raises ideas about better teaching techniques.

Characteristics of a hypothesis –

While creating a hypothesis, many things should be taken care of, because they are important for valid verification. The hypothesis_should be simple, specific and conceptual. There is no ambiguity in the construction of a hypothesis, this should be one-sided, that is, it should test only one relationship at a time. for example; The average number of male students in mathematics in class is higher than female students.

The rate of suicide is very contrary to social cohesion (Black and Champion 1976).

Thus a hypothesis_should be able to verify:methods and techniques should be available for data collection.

A hypothesis_should be operational:This means that it can be expressed in words that can be measured. If it can not be measured and tested and therefore, no conclusion can be obtained.

    1. A hypothesis_should be related to the existing body of knowledge.
    2. There is a possibility of confirmation and rejection in a hypothesis.
    3. A hypothesis_should be proficient. (Economical)
    4. A hypothesis_should be method oriented.

In building the hypothesis, the student should adhere to the above mentioned rules. Creating acceptable hypotheses_is not difficult, if the problem giving birth to hypotheses_is carefully defined and defined. The form of a hypothesis_can be a declarative statement, in which there will be suggested answers for the problem, and which follows the formal requirements of the_hypothesis.

The following are two examples of problems and their related_hypotheses.

Problem 1: Does practicing favorite hands improve the efficiency of unrestricted hand in the mirror drawing experiment?
Hypothesis: Practical mirror drawing exercises with favorite hands greatly improves the efficiency of unrestricted hands.
Problem 2: Are the male rat active during 6-6 days in an activity cage, similar to female mice stress?
Hypothesis: During a period of 6 days spent in an activity cage, female mice are not more active than the stresses of female mice.

Function of hypothesis –

A hypothesis_performs the following functions:

i) The formulation of a hypothesis_provides a study with focus.
ii) It tells you what specific aspects of a research problem are to check
iii) It tells what data is to be gathered and what not to collect
iv) Creating a hypothesis_enhances fairness in a study.
