Line 51-56
Death closes all: but something are the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices.
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken from Ulysses Poem written by Alfred Tennyson.
Context –
In the following lines, Ulysses knows that death will destroy everything. But he still believes that he can do a lot. Because he is old now. Here the word ERE stands for the “Before”. “The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep”
Now Ulysses, here in these lines, says that the sun is about to set, and the night is about to come. Here in these lines it seems as if he is even thinking about his death because now he too is old. Now here is the line. Lights twinkle from the rocks: it means night is coming and the stars are coming out.
“The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep”
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks.
Lines 51-56
Come, my friends,
’Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken from Ulysses Poem written by Alfred Tennyson.
Context –
In these lines, he tells his friend that it is not too late. Let’s see some new places. He wants to travel in the sea with his helm. He intends to travel as long as possible in his ship. Must have traveled so much. Meaning he wants to travel a lot until he dies. Till then he wants to do this work. Here Ulysses also learns that he and his companions will not live long as all are old now. He won’t live long. But they will all die and return to their friend Achilles.
Line 65-70
Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken from Ulysses Poem written by Alfred Tennyson.
Context –
Ulysses says in these lines that he and his fellow sailors are his friends. They are all old now and their ship does not have enough fuel to go further. Now all these people are one team. Everyone’s heartbeats together. But still, he wants to face the challenge without losing. what a dare.
