How did English/ English Studies gain support and consolidation in post independent India?

They include three stories, seven poems, two plays, nine essays, one or two written by Gandhi, Nehru or Khushwant Singh to accommodate the demand for nationalist or local flavour. The other essays or poems could be utterly unrelated to the context of Indian classrooms. Anthologies suit profit-motivated publishing houses and ideologically conservative university departments / selection committees. Such anthologies are then subjected to new critical readings, a close scrutiny of the text to unravel syntactical, linguistic and idiomatic expressions, organisation of matter, quality of prose, analysis of metre, images figures of speech, etc. They are not analysed within a specific ideological, theoretical frame.
