Critically analyse The English Patient as a modernist novel.

They are Almasy, the ‘English’ patient, burnt so badly in a plane fire that his face is barely recognisable as a human face. The reader is given enough indications that Almasy has been working as a spy for the Germans. The young Hana who clings to the English patient, caring for him faithfully and tenaciously, lives with a deep, inner void, a sorrow brought on by the loss of her father, her lover and her unborn child (whom she has had aborted) in the same war.
