THE DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE

At the same time, you should not get the impression that a defining relative clause is used only in definitions.

Read the following:

The man who came to my house yesterday evening is a musician.

The book that you lent me is very exciting.

These are not definitions of ‘man’ and ‘book’. The relative clause in each of these cases provides specific information about its antecedent without which the sentence will not be quite meaningful.
