In your opinion, what is the theme of ‘Dover Beach’?

In Dover Beach’s poem, the poet has described pessimism. He tells everyone that the world is full of sorrows.

The poet recalls that in the olden time’s people used to have a feeling of love and respect for each other, which they have now lost. Here the poet is looking towards the sea in which the tide has come but it is calm. The water on the banks of Davar is shining in the light of the moon. Then he says that such a moonlit and pleasant night used to happen on the coast of France also. But now nothing like this happens there.

Then the poet tells his wife that come here and see, when the drops of sea waterfall here, how beautiful they become with the light of the moon. Their color changes from blue to white. His wife says that the view is really beautiful. I also love listening to the sound of the waves. When it comes back from the shore. Then the poet says that you like the sound of the waves while it turns back in the ocean.

When the tide comes, it throws the pebbles while coming back. This voice makes me sad. When his wife asks him the reason, the poet explains that a short time ago he heard a roar on a Greek seashore named Sopholic, which made him notice the increase and decrease of human suffering.

Why are people so sad these days? He says that hearing the same sound on the shores of England, makes me feel the same sad thoughts again. The ones I never want to think about. He says that earlier when people followed religion. They believed in God. Till then even God used to take care of their happiness. He would not let them suffer much. They all lived comfortably and happily.

They used to help each other. They lived in love with each other. But now people don’t believe in God and love and respect have no meaning in their life. That’s why people have to face so much misery because when sorrow comes then no one stays with anyone. Because people nowadays neither trust each other nor love each other.

I am able to feel it better at night. That’s why I feel so sad. I stay away from the beach as much as possible. Then the poet tells his wife that dear, we will live each other with truth and faith. We will never leave each other’s side. I promise you that I will always take care of you. I will be with you and believe in you and will be faithful. Because this world appears full of happiness like a dream world.

But actually, there’s a lot of sadness here. Everyone’s life seems to be full of happiness but there is a lot of sadness in their life. There is no cure for these sorrows. Here people fight with each other and run away from each other. That is why there is no use in living in such a world, but we have to live a human life. That is why I wish that we all live with each other with love and respect. Be like human beings with humans, not be selfish with your own selfishness.
