Section A

(i) Epic Theatre: Epic theatre is a theatrical movement and style developed by German playwright Bertolt Brecht in the early 20th century. It aimed to distance the audience emotionally from the events on stage and promote critical thinking about social and political issues. Unlike traditional theatre, which seeks to immerse the audience in the emotions of the characters, epic theatre encourages a more detached and analytical approach.

Key features of epic theatre include the “alienation effect” (Verfremdungseffekt), where techniques such as breaking the fourth wall, direct address, and the use of placards are employed to remind the audience that they are watching a performance and not reality. This disruption of immersion encourages viewers to question and reflect upon the underlying social, economic, and political messages conveyed by the play.

Epic theatre aimed to provoke audiences into actively considering the socio-political context and the implications of the events portrayed. It was an attempt to use art as a means of fostering societal change and critical awareness. Brecht’s approach has influenced modern theatre and cinema, inspiring playwrights and filmmakers to incorporate similar distancing techniques to engage audiences in thoughtful examination of important issues.
