Phrasal Verbs With “Over”

IGNOU GRAMMAR PART 5 – How many of you heard this word called “Over”? Of course, it is indeed quite common and we do keep hearing it many times. But do you know about phrasal verbs with “Over” which can really help you to make your English much better?

Let us start IGNOU GRAMMAR PART 5 –

First, one is quite easy and most of us probably already know.

Take Over – Take Control (When things are controlled by someone or something, we can use this phrase called Take Over. To put in simple words, it means when you do not have control on something and someone else is controlling it)

जब कोई चीज पर कंट्रोल Control कर लेती है तो हम इसका Take Over प्रयोग कर सकते हैं।

उदाहरण के तौर पर –
जैसे किसी कंपनी ने किसी दूसरी कंपनी को Take Over (control) कर लिया।

Ex. Vodafone took over Hutch.

या फिर जैसे आपके घर में बहुत सारी चीटिंया अचानक से आ जाती है और पूरे घर पर कब्जा control कर लेती है।

Ex. The house has been taken over by Ants. (It means Ants are everywhere in that house/flat/apartment and it is not safe to live over there)

Movement Verb + Over

It means when you suppose to join someone at their particular place (it could be an office or home or wherever they are).

For example –
You are in a kind of trouble and you call your friend and say this –
“Hi, can I come over..?!?”
It means you are saying to your friend that you want to join him/her at their place.

Talking about other movement Verb + over, there are many such as –

Walk over – Walking like the way we do (“over” has been added to make it complete and it indicates to join someone wherever they are) to reach destination
Run over – Running like the way we do (“over” has been added to make it complete and it indicates to join someone wherever they are) to reach destination quickly

Talk Something Over
It means to discuss about something and come up with a decision.

Fall Over
Suppose you are walking and fall over.

Get Over
When you get recovered from your past which is bad.

Ex. I got over him.

Start Over = Start again

Ex. Yes, I am done with it. Let us start over.
