(a) In this passage from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” the speaker, Hamlet, reflects on the gravity of his sin, feeling that it is so heinous that its stench reaches even the heavens. He acknowledges the ancient curse of fratricide and laments his inability to pray, despite his strong desire to do so. The phrase “Pray can I not” signifies his overwhelming guilt and internal conflict. The juxtaposition of “inclination” and “will” reveals his struggle between wanting to seek forgiveness and being unable to bring himself to do so. The context underscores Hamlet’s moral turmoil and his contemplation of revenge for his father’s murder, as well as his delay in taking action. The passage captures the depth of his emotional and moral struggle, setting the stage for the complex themes of the play.
