Why do you think it is important for learners to learn on their own? What are the teaching strategies you need to use in order to help students become good language learners?

We all know the fact that language is not a simple system; in fact it very complex set of symbols, rules, systems and structure. The process of learning of such a complex system is not an easy task and in fact is very complex.

Therefore we have every reason to believe that if a normal or fairly intelligent person can acquire knowledge about gardening or cooking by learning and practice, he/she may not be able to perform with same efficiency in language learning. A person, therefore, who wants to learn language or continue learning language independently has to first teach him/herself the art of doing it and also he/she will have to build enough confidence in his/her ability to accomplish such a complex task.

Let us now look at some other reasons to promote what we call learner training:

(a) The development of faculty of autonomy or in other words the ability of doing things independently. Usually the perception for the goal of education which prevails in the society is to achieve certain skills but it is not so. The goal is much broader and exceeds the limit of certain skills and ability. It is the complete development of brain with the power of thinking independently and thus acquiring the questioning, reasoning and logical thinking.

(b) There is no doubt that learners are of different kind and have different mindset. And also the process with these learners can be made autonomous has to deal with numerous differences. In the process of learning, learners might differ in the way they want themselves to be taught. Some of the learners might want to lay more emphasis on the grammatical rules and regulation while other might claim that they need not take a look at these rules. Some of the learners might enjoy the process of communication while learning the language, while other may feel embarrassed at the very thought of the process of communication. There are learners who are not able to memorize anything without writing it down while other have very good photographic memory and can memorize anything they see once. These differences vary with different learner and there is no limit in such differences.

(c) It is very important to impart this training among students at primary level because at the higher level the education is less dependent on teachers and professors and at that time if the student lacks this ability of self-dependency than it would be a big problem for him/her to get educated despite of the desire to get educated.
