THE NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE

Compare these two sentences:

  1. I have a brother who lives in Karachi
  2. I have a brother, who teaches Physics at a college.
  3. The absence of a comma after brother in Sentence (i) implies that I have more than one brother, and that one of them is being singled out for mention here; it is the brother who lives in Karachi. (Others live here in India in Delhi or elsewhere)

A comma after ‘brother’ in Sentence (ii) implies that I have only one brother. If you wish to know more about him, I can tell you that he teaches Physics at a college. Sentence (i) has a defining relative clause, while Sentence (ii) has a non-defining one.
