POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX
POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX – Kamala Das catches the photo of her mom in a noteworthy snapshot of understanding. The speaker in a quick forward life, stops for a minute to respect her mom, with reference to time and space.
POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX
Driving from my parent’s
home to Cochin last Friday
morning, I saw my mother,
beside me
Words are demonstrated to connote time, space and position (‘next to me’). The demonstration of “considering” stances to be a stationary minute as against the motor demonstration of ‘driving’. The drive from home to Cochin likewise serves to delineate the illustration of excursion as experience. The lyric is for sure conceived, out of adoration as one watches the possessive pronoun “my” when “Mother” would have done the trick. The speaker’s comprehension of her mom at the age of sixty-six, would be to be sure one of advanced understanding; as it would be shaded with the speaker’s individual maternal experience as with her own particular kids. It would be an alternate one, with sign to the past when she was single. She could most likely judge her better as a spouse, and mother now.
POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX
doze, open mouthed, her face
ashen like that
of a corpse and realised with
pain
that she was as old as she
looked but soon
put that thought away, and
Words like “rest” point to the lethargy that maturity has forced upon her. The expression ‘open– mouthed’ means the need/numbness of decorum and conditions, reverberating that the end is just about the corner. This is avowed with “colorless” combined with her face. She understands in a powerful minute that her mom now looked as old as she might have been. The emptiness of Life and certainty of Death is sounded here as reverberated in Philip Larkin’s “Ambulances”. Kamala Das is an open essayist who catches the feelings of dread and dreams implanted somewhere down in the ladylike mind. What torments her more than the possibility of Death, is the dread of Death. The incongruity is that however she was “close to” her, she is by all accounts effectively spooky with the prospect of her being inaccessible to her as far as age “sixty-six”. That “that she was as old as she/looked” was self-evident; yet to the speaker it sinks that Age was getting up to speed with her.
POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX
Young
Tress sprinting, the merry children spilling
out of their homes, but after the airport’s
security check, standing a few yards
away, I looked again at her, wan,
pale
as a late winter’s moon and felt that
old
familiar ache, my childhood’s fear,
Kamala Das acknowledges with extraordinary hesitance the horrifying truth writ huge on her mom’s face. Her “colorless face” helped her to remember a cadaver both allegorically and actually. Maturing is typically viewed as the penultimate phase of a man’s life. It is a pointer to the closeness of the one dreaded for. The idea ignites fear in the artist’s heart, not for only one reason but rather two. The acknowledgment that her mom is moving towards the last truth of life stresses her as her adolescence fears, ” a well-known hurt”. Any kid is powerless and related with uncertainty, when the kid is in a circumstance/put separated from the mother. The speaker detects the comparable nervousness here, as if she will lose her mom. Kamala Das forgets about these wild contemplations and turns her view towards pictures loaded with greenery and vitality. The picture of the youngsters and the ‘dashing trees are compared against foreordained Death.
However the thought keeps on engrossing her .After the air terminal security-check, the poetess turns her look again towards her palid Mother. Note that the demonstration of seeing her off at the air terminal appears to be a similitude of watching her leave for Death. The examination is evoked by the speaker’s feelings of dread as she keeps on comparing her mom to a “pre-spring’s moon.”
POETRY POEM -1 MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX
but all I said was, see you soon,
Amma,
all I did was smile and smile and
smile……
The way that the artist is en route to her next stage constrains her for a minute to think about. With incredible stoicism, she acknowledges the threatening developments of life and whatever she did was “grin and grin and grin” She discloses to her mom emphatically “see you soon”, on the grounds that partition dependably goes before compromise.
