THE PROCESS OF STANDARDIZATION : ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Towards the end of the 14th century, East Midland was an embryonic written standard. However, there were variations within the dialect. So, at the beginning we see in use a series of different written standards. However, after around 1430, one of these variants became increasingly dominant due to its use in governmental and official documents. Towards the end of that century, the fixation of the selected variety was strengthened and accelerated enormously by the printing press.

We still can not assume the existence of a standard that is spoken. At some point the discourse of the merchants of London in the east of the central region acquired prestige.

Students from all over England gathered at the two universities of Oxford and Cambridge, both a few miles from London. In the triangle formed by these three centers, a large part of the East Midland discourse would have been heard, and it could possibly be used as a kind of Lingua Franca in a mobile social group. If such a popular dialect existed, it would have helped to extend East Midland, not because of its prestige value, or because it was imposed by the most powerful group, but because of its usefulness in communicating with people who spoke another dialect. One of these uses was as a means to popular culture: in particular, the tradition of popular song, which flourished in the era of standardization. A review of popular songs from the sixteenth century to the present reveals that the linguistic medium for popular singing does not reflect, in general, regional differences.
