These have symbolic significance which would be discussed in Unit 13 (dealing with imagery and symbolism). These discoveries serve an important purpose they move both the protagonist and the reader deeper into her mind and past. Objective, concrete surroundings and the present are back grounded in favour of mental exploration of the narrator. Thus we see that Part 1 describes the descent, while part II explores the world, existing at the bottom of the lake.
