The narrative of Surfacing has been divided into three parts and each part delineates the narrator’s search for her father and for her own real self. The novel, dramatically, has a balanced structure in its tripartite division.

PART I OF SURFACING –

Part I consists of the characters and the physical background and sets in motion the groundwork for the action of the novel. The problem of the disappearance of the narrator’s father causes a rising action as the she searches for clues, which could lead to his whereabouts.
