Hers is a down-to-earth realism with a strong tilt towards ‘naturalism’. This ‘naturalism’ also is of a’greatly functional kind. In a sense her work is more in the line of writers like Arnold Bennett 1867-193 1). Bennett, like Roy, was greatly influenced by Zola and his books mainly concern life in the industrial towns of the northwest Midland in England.
