To Marguerite Poem | Summary line by line | BEGC-110 NOTES
This poem was published in Empedocles on Etna in 1852, and at that time the title of the poem was “To Marguerite, in Returnig a Volume of the Letters of Ortis”. The poem was printed in the 1857 edition as a sequel to Isolation: To Marguerite. This poem is written in iambic tetrameter. In this poem, the poet has tried to show that every human being lives alone in the seclusion like an island. Despite having millions and millions of people, they feel lonely. Whether it is in the Victorian Era or the situation in the Modern era. Despite having millions and millions of people, they feel alone. When you read this poem, you realize that it is a very pessimistic worldview.
Stanza 1 – To Marguerite
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken form To Marguerite Poem written by William Wordsworth.
Context –
There is a total of 4 stanzas in “To Marguerite” poem and there are 6 lines in each stanza. Here the poet says that we are completely scattered in the ocean of our life. We are completely isolated. We are not one. Straits are called water basins in which there is a tight passage of water that connects a large group of water.
These are called “straits”. So here the poet says that life is like an island. Every man is like a separate island and between us there are straits. Straits are water channels that connect a large body of water or an ocean or pond. Here the poet wants to say that Straits are lying scattered among us. There are straits between us where we can hear the voice of others. But we don’t have any attachment. We are not connected. The poet further says that
Shoreles means that which has no edge. That is, our life is such an ocean that has no shore. Here the poet speaks of the ocean as watery wild. There is water everywhere. We are like island. According to the poet, we are like a island in ourselves. Because of this, we live alone despite the number of crores i.e. we do not have any connection with each other.
We have no attachment to each other. Despite being separated, there is no connection with anyone. But, despite being completely different, there is a desire to meet each other inside them. Every person is leading a completely different life. One is living a lonely life. The old times were intertwined. There was an emotional attachment to each other.
stanza 2 – To Marguerite
But when the moon their hollows lights,
And they are swept by balms of spring,
And in their glens, on starry nights,
The nightingales divinely sing:
And lovely notes, from shore to shore,
Across the sounds and channels pour –

Context –
Here the poet says that there is a very nice and beautiful environment here. Despite this, there is no relation between the people with the mind. The poet says that the moon is spreading its light on the ground. Despite having such a beautiful atmosphere, the light of the moon is completely hollow. That is, now she does not have that beauty as it used to be. That is, the light of the moon has no special significance. Human beings are not connected to each other despite having such a nice environment, how good the weather is. The poet compares human relationships with the light of the moon.
When there is a starry night, it is a beautiful night. The birds sing songs in that valley. All these things together also prove to be unsuccessful in connecting humans. NIGHTINGALES Bird’s song tries to connect two islands with one island. But all these things prove unsuccessful.
STANZA 3 – To Marguerite
Oh! then a longing like despair
Is to their farthest caverns sent;
For surely once, they feel, we were
Part of a single continent!
Now round us spreads the watery plain –
oh might our marges meet again !
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken form To Marguerite Poem written by William Wordsworth.
Context –
The poet tells here how much human desire is to be connected to each other. But this could not happen. Then the poet says that they want to be attached to each other. Wish for an attachment. Want to be close to each other, but it all turns into despair. The poet says that we realize that earlier we were actually like a single continent. And today we are divided into islands. Today we are lonely. But there was a time when we were a single continent. We understood each other. We were not alone like this. Right now there is water all around us. We are like an island.
I wish that the shores of our island would meet once again. We would become one again. Let us take care of each other once again. We are not lonely like that.
Stanza 4 – To Marguerite
Who order’d, that their longing’s fire
Should be, as soon as kindled , cool’d?
Who renders vain their deep desire? –
A God, a God their severance ruled!
And bade betwixt their shores to be
The uplumb’d, salt, estranging sea.
Ans – Reference – These lines are taken form To Marguerite Poem written by William Wordsworth.
Context –
Whatever the poet has told before that how is our life? He gives his answer in this verse. The poet says here that who is it that has separated us. Who doesn’t want us to love each other? Who is it who ordered. (Fire of longing) Who has cooled the fire of love. We have a great desire to be connected to each other. Take care of each other. May there be love in each other’s heart. Who makes this effort useless, who makes it unsuccessful. This is the rhetorical question that posted. Answer – God made us alone. God separated us. God tied us up in Ireland.
God controls separation. God has separated us as much, which has destroyed all love from our hearts. God has ordered that the shores of the island be completely isolated.
According to the poet God has completely separated us as an island. This God has increased the distance inside us so that our thinking cannot meet the edge of understanding and neither love for each other and we remain lonely like this. Lying alone in the sea. God did this because people had left religion and went towards science. It is the result of our own actions. We got what we did. Ever since we have lost faith in religion. Since then God has divided us into islands. Broke us, tore us apart.
