Why do you think Australia is known as a multi-cultural society?

Since that time people from every corner of the globe have made Australia their home. The 1991 census snows that: 42% of our population were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas; 23% were either born in a non-English speaking country or have at !east one parent from such a country; workers from non-English speaking backgrounds make up some 15% of the total Australian work force; and 17% of the Australian population speak a language other than English at home. It has been estimated that some 21% of Australia’s 800,000 small businesses are owned and operated by people whose first language is not English.
