Too easily impressed; she liked whate’er
She looked on, and her looks went everywhere. 

These lines, taken from Thomas Hardy’s poem “Neutral Tones,” describe a woman who had a trusting and easily captivated heart. The speaker reflects on a past relationship that has turned cold and lifeless. The woman, portrayed as being too quickly and easily pleased, found beauty in everything she saw. Her impressions were swift, and her attention wandered everywhere. However, the poem suggests that this naivety led to disillusionment and the eventual deterioration of the relationship.
