THE DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE
Notice that the use of the relative pronoun is optional in these sentences. This is because the relative pronoun can be omitted when it is not the subject of the relative clause.
Compare these sentences:
- The man whom I accidentally met yesterday is an old friend.
- The lady who came to me yesterday is an old friend.
In sentence (1) ‘whom’ is not the subject of the relative clause. We can therefore omit it.
The man I accidentally met yesterday is an old friend.
is an acceptable sentence
In sentence (2) ‘who’ is the subject of the relative clause. If you omit it, and you will get an ungrammatical sentence:
The ‘man came to me yesterday is an old friend.
