INDEPENDENT AND DEPENDENT CLAUSES

A dependent clause, on the other hand, is one that cannot stand by itself ; it depends on the main clause for it to be meaningful. ‘…when I whistled’, or ‘…so that he can relax after retirement’ are incomplete except when they are read or heard as parts of the longer sentences. They are both dependent clauses.
