1. Decline of the “Congress System”:

The “Congress System” refers to the period from India’s independence in 1947 until the late 1960s when the Indian National Congress dominated the political landscape, holding a near-monopoly on power. However, by the late 1960s, this system began to decline. One major factor was growing dissatisfaction with the Congress party’s centralization of power and perceived disconnect from the grassroots. Regional parties gained prominence as they championed local issues and identities, challenging the Congress’ national dominance. This period saw the emergence of non-Congress state governments, especially in South India and West Bengal. Moreover, significant internal factionalism and leadership disputes within the Congress weakened its hold.
