2 (i) Context: The first passage is from the play “Oedipus Rex” (also known as “Oedipus the King”) by Sophocles. The play is a tragedy set in the ancient city of Thebes. Oedipus, the King of Thebes, is determined to find out the truth behind the plague that has befallen the city, causing suffering and death to its citizens. He learns through an oracle that the plague is a result of the unpunished murder of the previous king, Laius.

In this passage, Oedipus addresses the people of Thebes and proclaims that he will find the culprit responsible for the death of King Laius. He calls upon anyone who has knowledge of the murderer to come forward and confess. Oedipus is resolute in his quest for justice and will not rest until the mystery is solved.
