1. Fill in the blanks with suitable adverbs or prepositions to form phrasal verbs:
i) Please take off your coat.
ii) We have taken on a new project.
iii) I was taken for a doctor because I had been able to cure some people in the neighborhood.
iv) Seeta takes after her mother.
v) The old lady offered to take in the homeless stranger.
2. Give meanings of the phrasal verbs in the following sentences:
i) Don’t give in to the threats of the terrorists. Meaning: Do not succumb or yield to the threats of the terrorists; do not give up under their pressure.
ii) The engine gives off steam. Meaning: The engine releases or emits steam.
iii) They tried to cover up the evil deed. Meaning: They attempted to hide or conceal the evil action.
iv) I fell for the beautiful girl. Meaning: I became emotionally attracted to the beautiful girl; I fell in love with her.

v) Rhythm: Rhythm refers to the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry, creating a musical flow.
5. Understanding Irony:
Irony is a literary device that involves expressing a meaning opposite to the literal interpretation. It adds depth and complexity to a text, often creating humor, sarcasm, or a deeper meaning. There are different types of irony:
a. Irony of situation: This occurs when there is a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. For example, a fire station burning down.
b. Irony in satire: Satirical irony is used to criticize or mock individuals, society, or politics. It often employs humor and sarcasm to reveal flaws or absurdities.
c. Ironic contrast: This happens when there is a sharp contrast between the appearance and reality of a situation. For instance, a rich man who pretends to be poor.
6. Analysis of the poem ‘A Prayer for My Daughter’:
i) The poet wants his daughter to have a balanced and moderate beauty that won’t overwhelm others or herself. He hopes that her beauty won’t cause distress in the eyes of strangers or make her vain when looking at herself in the mirror.
ii) The hazards of being made beautiful overmuch imply that excessive beauty might lead to arrogance and a lack of kindness. People may focus only on external appearance and overlook her true nature. The poet illustrates this by suggesting that when someone is made too beautiful, they might consider their beauty enough and lose the ability to form genuine connections with others, potentially leading to a lonely life.
