3. Elucidate gender differences in self-construal.
Gender Differences in Self-Construal: Gender differences in self-construal refer to variations in how individuals define and perceive themselves in relation to others and their social environment based on their gender identity. Self-construal can be broadly categorized into two types: independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal.
  1. Independent Self-Construal: This type of self-construal emphasizes individuality, autonomy, and personal agency. People with an independent self-construal tend to define themselves based on their personal traits, achievements, and preferences. Gender differences in independent self-construal may manifest as males being more likely to emphasize their individual accomplishments and distinctiveness, often striving for autonomy and self-expression.
  2. Interdependent Self-Construal: Interdependent self-construal centers on social connectedness, relationships, and one’s roles within various social groups. Individuals with an interdependent self-construal view themselves in terms of their relationships, family roles, and social obligations. Females often exhibit stronger interdependent self-construal, focusing on communal traits and the importance of maintaining harmonious connections with others.

These gender differences in self-construal are not fixed or universally applicable; they can vary across cultures, contexts, and individuals. Additionally, modern perspectives acknowledge that people can possess a blend of both independent and interdependent self-construal, highlighting the complexity of self-identity.
