Q. 4. Process-based research on writing has revolutionalized its teaching”. Refer to your experience of being a teacher and learner to comment on this statement.

There goes a general belief in teachers of our society that teaching composition is not required and writing a passage at the end of every week is good enough to develop writing skills. But the truth deviates from this belief of teachers. Without a proper guidelines and instruction students would not be able to master this complex skill of writing. No matter hard student practices and how much efforts he/she puts in, writing cannot be mastered without a proper and adequate guideline and instruction.

After understanding that writing is the most complex skill of the language communication, one may obviously ask that is it possible to teach writing? The answer is positive. But unlike other subjects it cannot be taught through lectures and discussions. It can be taught by creating such a condition in classroom which is favourable for learning to write.

Another question, which comes almost as naturally as the first one is – Why should we teach writing? Let us see what Raimes has to say about this. According to him there are three important reasons for teaching writing. They
are:

(a) Very frequently people feel the requirement of communicating through writing.

(b) Writing can help students to have two fold developments. It teaches them the correct use of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. It also makes them do some experiments with language.

(c) It also makes student learn more and help in learning. The very close relationship which exists between the process of writing and the process of thinking makes writing an integral part of the communication trading programme.
